The cards, expected to be available to residents by Aug. 18, may be obtained and used by all county residents regardless of age, income or existing health coverage.

District 2 Commissioner Ronnie Pevehouse, chairman of the Muskogee County Board of Commissioners, said the program could provide "significant savings for the uninsured and underinsured."

"Even those fortunate to have prescription coverage may use the card to save money on drugs that are not covered by their health plans," Pevehouse said. "Residents do not have to be Medicare beneficiaries to be eligible for this program."

The discount drug card program, Pevehouse said, is being made available through a partnership with the National Association of Counties and Caremark Rx without cost to county taxpayers.
